A whopping RM1 million was donated by supporters and well-wishers towards the oldest Sikh temple in Penang, the 122-year-old Wadda Gurdwara Sahib which is currently undergoing major renovation work.
In line with this, a fund raising dinner was held at the Berjaya Hotel in Pulau Tikus.
Present was State Exco for Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo and the temple committee members.
Lending support was Member of Parliament for Jelutong RSN Rayer and State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin.
Jagdeep shared that the work at the temple is an exemplary showcase of the efforts of the state government.
“The restoration and conservation project will be completed as soonest possible. This project amounting to RM6 million will see this Class 1 Heritage building restored and become an icon not only for the Sikh community but also to all Penangites and Malaysians.
“As the Chairman of the RIBI fund, to-date, we have completed 220 projects for Chinese Temples (109) and Indian Temples (56), Churches (44) and Gurdwaras (11) with an allocation of RM9.24 million.
“I wish to take this opportunity to thank the patron, my mother, Datin Seri Utama Gurmit Kaur and the organizing committee headed by Dato Seri Mahinder Singh Dulku, Dato Kuldip Singh Sohan, Dato Malkit Singh along with well-wishers like Dato Rethinam Pillai, Dato Gulab Mahatam Rai and everyone from all communities and other races to support the cause of our Sikh community in the conservation and restoration project,” said Jagdeep.
