Penang being the epicentre of the country’s favourite durian production, the state aims to cash-in on “durian tourism” with the launch of its media campaign to promote tourism in the state.

Present at a vibrant launch ceremony held at Komar Walk earlier today was State Exco for Tourism & Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai accompanied by state assemblymen, YB Wong Yuee Harng, Yb Teh Lai Heng, Peang MOTAC Director Dr Annuar Mohamed, Penang Global Tourism CEO Ooi Chok Yan, Penang MAH Chairman Dato Tony Goh among others.

Wong expressed his pleasure to be at the ceremony to officially launch the Penang Durian Season 2026, one of the most anticipated highlights in our tourism calendar.

“Penang is often celebrated as the food capital of Malaysia, and when it comes to durian, we are proud to offer something truly special. Here, durian is not just a fruit—it is a living heritage, a tradition passed down through generations.

“With Penang’s “King of Fruits” promotion, visitors during the durian season can also easily encounter numerous durian stalls scattered across the streets and alleys of George Town. At any moment, one may pause, pick up a durian covered in sharp spines yet revealing a soft, creamy sweetness within, and slowly savour the layers of flavour and delightful surprises it offers.

“What makes Penang even more unique is that we are the only place in Malaysia where durians are grown on an island. In Balik Pulau, the elements of wind, soil, sea, and island terrain come together in perfect harmony, producing durians with rare character and a truly distinctive taste that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

“Today, we are also proud to introduce our updated Penang Durian Brochure, designed to guide visitors through the best farms, varieties, and experiences across the island,” said Wong.

He also added that in addition to the printed brochure, which allows visitors to conveniently carry and refer to it throughout their journey, this year we also aim to fully embrace digital platforms to comprehensively promote Penang’s durian tourism experience.

“Penang Global Tourism has produced a new six-episode video series, capturing the full journey of Penang durian—from heritage and environment, to cultivation and taste. Through these episodes, we invite the world to experience not just the fruit, but the stories, people, and traditions behind it.

“As part of our efforts to enhance visitor experiences, we are launching the Penang Travel Deals – Durian Series, featuring a wide range of curated packages. These packages include farm visits, hotel promotions, and transportation bundles, making it easier than ever for visitors to explore and enjoy Penang’s durian season. This is one of the latest initiatives by the Penang State Government in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY2026).

“Durian season in Penang is more than just a culinary experience—it is an invitation to connect with our land, our people, and our heritage,” added Wong.

Meanwhile, guests who took time to attend the ceremony were treated to some tasty durians at the launch ceremony.
