This weekend (Aug 20 & 21) the Penang International Food Festival 2022 (PIFF 2022) will be kicking off with the “Street Food Festival” at the Design Village Outlet Mall from 5pm to 11pm.
Dedicated to showcase the world-renowned and diverse street food scene of Penang, a destination touted by Condé Nast Traveler as ‘Asia’s Next Great Foodie City’, “Street Food Festival” will gather 80 hawkers from the mainland and island in one location to serve the state’s authentic must-eats street food, ranging from char koay teow to pasembur, laksa and many more!
This year, “Street Food Festival” is happening for the first time in Seberang Perai as the Festival aims to shine a spotlight on the mainland, in line with the Penang State Government’s “Opposite Side of the Island – Seberang Perai” campaign and Penang 2030 vision.
The two-day event is expected to draw food-loving visitors and tourists savouring Penang’s street food delights while discovering interesting and exciting tourist attraction spots and hidden gems in Seberang Perai, such as the idyllic fishing village of Pulau Aman, the charming agro-theme park Kampung Agong, and the Penang International Container Art Festival’s (PICAF) container art installations in Batu Kawan.
Present to launch the festival was Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer, Ooi Chok Yan along with Ben Ho VP of the MAH Penang Chapter and festival director James Wong among others.
Meanwhile, those looking to satisfy their Penang street food cravings can do so at the Festival as it offers a wide range of Penang fare. Much-loved vendors like Jalil Coconut Shake and Muslim Pasembor Hussain will be at the Festival.
Mainlanders craving a plate of island’s Tiger Char Koay Teow can dig into its wok-hei-filled offering as the hawker will cross over to the mainland for only two days! Besides these, various Malaysian dishes like satay, mee ketam, ikan bakar, and more will also be available at the two-day Festival. Further, kuih lovers will get a chance to discover elusive northern Malay traditional kuih such as serabai and dangai, alongside drool-worthy Chinese-style apom and Indian-style putu piring at the Festival.
Other than a diverse array of street food, visitors to the “Street Food Festival” can expect a funfair and live performances. There will also be a fireworks display on 21 August at 8:30pm, making it an Instagrammable event for everyone.
Additionally, a shuttle bus service will be available to facilitate transportation for festival-goers. The bus is due every hour from 4:30pm to 11:30pm on 20 & 21 August.
The first bus will depart from Queensbay Mall at 4:30pm and the last bus will depart from Design Village Outlet Mall at 11:30pm.
Design Village Outlet Mall is the main sponsor for “Street Food Festival”, which is held as part of PIFF 2022.
The Penang International Food Festival 2022 is organised by TLM Event, endorsed by the Penang State Government and is fully supported by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and Penang Global Tourism (PGT).
