Cambodia Airways becomes the newest airline to offer direct connection to Penang.
The direct flight will commence June 26, 2025.
In announcing this new development was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai.
“Following the launch of the Chengdu–Penang direct flight on 30 April this year, another new route is set to commence on 26 June.
“Cambodia Airways has officially announced via its official Facebook page the launch of a new direct flight between Phnom Penh and Penang on 26 June 2025. This new route marks a significant milestone in enhancing regional connectivity and underscores Malaysia’s role as the ASEAN Chair in 2025.
“The launch of this flight service is timely, coinciding with Malaysia’s role as the ASEAN Chair for 2025. Malaysia, as the chair of the ASEAN group, which represents the fifth-largest economy in the world with a population about 680 million, is poised to further strengthen regional connectivity,” said Wong in a press statement.
He emphasized that the introduction of this direct flight would bolster Penang’s position as a key international gateway, expanding both the breadth and depth of global exchanges, particularly in terms of connectivity and cultural ties with ASEAN member states.
“Cambodia Airways, headquartered in Phnom Penh with its main operations based at Phnom Penh International Airport, has been steadily expanding its international route network in recent years. In addition to the soon-to-be-launched direct service between Phnom Penh and Penang, the airline currently operates a direct flight to Kuala Lumpur. Beyond Malaysia, Cambodia Airways’ international routes also extend to several major cities, including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou, reflecting its growing presence in the region,” he added.
The direct flight from Phnom Penh to Penang, identified as flight KR785, is scheduled to commence on 26 June 2025. This flight will depart from Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) at 08:05 AM local time and is expected to arrive at Penang International Airport (PEN) at 10:55 AM local time. The service will operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays.
On the return journey, the direct flight from Penang to Phnom Penh, flight KR786, will also begin operations on 26 June 2025. This flight will depart from Penang International Airport (PEN) at 11:55 AM local time and is scheduled to land at Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) at 12:40 PM local time. The service will similarly operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays.
“The direct flight between Phnom Penh and Penang offers great convenience for tourists who prefer multi-country travel in Southeast Asia, especially those from Europe, the United States, and China. They can choose to visit Phnom Penh first and then fly to Penang, or plan their trip in reverse order, allowing them to experience the unique cultural heritage and local charms of both destinations within a short period of time. The launch of this route not only effectively connects Phnom Penh and Penang – two renowned travel destinations in Southeast Asia, but also creates favourable conditions for Penang to attract more international visitors transiting through Phnom Penh. Furthermore, tourists from Europe and the United States, who generally enjoy relatively strong purchasing power in Southeast Asia due to currency advantages, represent an important group of culturally curious travellers eager to explore the diverse heritage of the Indochina region and the broader Southeast Asia. They, too, will greatly benefit from this new direct connection.”
“To date, Penang International Airport’s route network has expanded across Asia and the Middle East, with direct flights connecting 21 international cities. With the introduction of the direct flight from Phnom Penh to Penang by Cambodia Airways, Penang’s international flight network has added another city, bringing Phnom Penh into the fold as the 22nd international destination served by Penang’s direct flight routes,” Wong added.
