This year, most fittingly, an award for leading the industry to a greater heights went to Yeoh as he was bold enough to experiment and adapt to a constantly changing industry by elevating the standard of existing tourism products, and concurrently delivering new ones to appeal to different demographics.
“Amidst the challenging Covid-19 pandemic between 2020 to 2022, there was no hesitation to adapt to the new norm which were deemed essential with the restrictions and protocols in place at that instant to ensure the survivability of our local communities,” said Yeoh.
He also set a benchmark of exemplary performance in the recovery of the industries. By undertaking a multi-year strategic growth plan known as the Penang Tourism Master Plan, Yeoh spearheaded a significant boost in the tourism sector, resulting in a substantial increase in tourist arrivals and revenues after the pandemic. By implementing effective marketing campaigns, forging international partnerships, and diversifying tourism offerings, Yeoh continues to position Penang as a premier destination, attracting visitors from around the world.
“One of the things I have always positioned Penang as is to provide a rich and affordable tourism experience to all walks of life. As the Penang State Government, I stand proud and grateful for this recognition bestowed upon me. This award is also a testament to the commitment of the state government, the unwavering support of the local communities and the resiliency of the Penang tourism stakeholders,” added Yeoh.
