Tourism Exco YB Wong Hon Wai hailed the massive surge of Chinese tourists to Penang.

“There has been a 259% growth in international routes and a 222% surge in Chinese tourists arrivals. Penang’s aviation network connects to 20 global cities”, said Wong following the inaugural flight by Loong Air to Penang.

“Today marks a significant milestone as Loong Air officially launches its direct flight from Xi’an to Penang. The inaugural flight has landed, and I am delighted to welcome this new connection. This milestone is not just about convenience—it represents a gateway for cultural exchange, economic collaboration and the growth of tourism between Xi’an and Penang. Together, we’re embarking on a new chapter of mutual prosperity and shared development.

The Xi’an-Penang route is remarkable for many reasons. This direct flight fills an essential gap in connectivity between Penang and Northwest China. Xi’an becomes the seventh city in China directly linked to Penang, joining a network of 11 routes that connect Chinese cities to Penang Island. For travelers from Xi’an and the northwest region of China.

“This connection strengthens Penang’s tourism industry and solidifies our place as one of the most beloved destinations for Chinese travellers.

“Currently, direct flights connect Penang to key Chinese cities such as Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Chongqing. Each of these routes opens opportunities for collaboration and cultural exchange while making it easier for travelers to explore the vibrant offerings of Penang.

“As we approach the Lunar New Year, I extend a warm invitation to travelers from Xi’an and all across China to visit Penang during this festive season. There’s no better time to experience the rich tapestry of traditions and celebrations that Penang offers. From captivating lion dance performances and vibrant street art to bustling festive markets and lantern-lit streets, Penang truly comes alive during the Lunar New Year. Whether it’s enjoying the unique blend of tradition and modernity or spending meaningful moments with loved ones, Penang promises a celebration like no other.

“This direct flight also underscores the incredible growth of Penang’s international aviation network. With Xi’an added, Penang now has direct connections to 20 international cities through 35 routes. These include not just major cities in China but also destinations such as Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta and many more.

“As of November 2024, Penang welcomed 108,029 Chinese visitors via international flights, a remarkable 222.7% increase compared to the 33,474 arrivals during the same period in 2023. Including visitors transiting via Kuala Lumpur or entering by land, the actual number is likely even higher.

“Analysing direct flight frequencies, Penang recorded 61 weekly flights from Chinese cities as of November 2024, a significant surge from 17 weekly flights during the same period in 2023, marking an extraordinary 258.82% growth.

“I want to thank Loong Air for their confidence in Penang and their efforts to launch this important route. To all travellers from Xi’an, welcome to Penang. We look forward to hosting you and ensuring you have a truly unforgettable experience in our culturally rich and vibrant island state”, said Wong in a press statement.
