The vibrant tapestry of Penang’s tourism scene has just grown richer with the official launch of the Penang River Cruise, a brand-new attraction along the picturesque Sungai Juru in Seberang Perai.

The cruise was officially unveiled earlier today by YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, in a ceremony that marked a key milestone in the state’s tourism development efforts.

“Today, we are adding a new dimension to Penang’s tourism appeal—the serene beauty of nature,” said YB Wong in his address. “The Penang River Cruise is more than just a ride; it is the rise of a new star in Seberang Perai’s tourism landscape. It brings renewed vitality to the industry, particularly for the mainland.”

Highlighting the global popularity of river cruises, Wong noted that this new product places Penang on the international map of river tourism experiences.

“River cruises are a globally recognised and sought-after experience, often featured in world-renowned destinations. Penang now joins this league with a cruise that showcases our unique natural and cultural heritage,” he added.

The Penang River Cruise offers passengers an immersive journey into the heart of Penang’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Along the route, tourists can admire authentic Southeast Asian water village architecture and spot an array of local wildlife, making it an eco-tourism experience unlike any other.

“From the agile Silvered Leaf Monkey and the sturdy Black Giant Squirrel, to woodpeckers, eagles, shorebirds and forest-dwelling reptiles. This cruise is like stepping into a living documentary,” Wong said.

On particularly calm days, passengers may even witness the mesmerizing phenomenon known as the “Mirror of the Sky,” where the river’s surface reflects the surrounding landscapes—riverside cottages, fishing boats, and lush mangroves—like a painting.

The journey also provides glimpses into the region’s agricultural and aquaculture heritage, with scenic views of paddy fields, cockle farms, and fish farms that underscore Seberang Perai’s rural charm and traditions.

The 15-kilometre river cruise stretches all the way downstream to where the Sungai Juru meets the Strait of Malacca, offering a rare sight of freshwater merging with seawater—a natural confluence that’s both educational and awe-inspiring.

With numerous photo-worthy spots, the cruise is especially popular during sunset hours, when the river transforms into a shimmering canvas of colors.

Guests at the launch were treated to a two-hour cruise to personally experience the new attraction. Among the distinguished attendees were YB Heng Lee Lee, ADUN Berapit, YB Gooi Hsiao Leung, ADUN Bukit Tengah, Ooi Chok Yan, CEO of Penang Global Tourism, Dr. Annuar Mohamed, Director, MOTAC Penang, Mohd Hadi Che Man, Director, Tourism Malaysia Northern Region, Gary Teoh, Managing Director, Auto-City, Cool Koe, Managing Director, Theme Reno & Director, Penang River Cruise

The Penang River Cruise is expected to play a significant role in diversifying the state’s tourism offerings, drawing both domestic and international visitors to Seberang Perai and contributing to the region’s economic growth.
