The Penang Fashion Week 2025 extravaganza kicked off in spectacular style last night with a glittering launch at Sunshine Central, graced by the State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai.
The runway came alive as a dazzling parade of models showcased stunning designs, vibrant personalities, and artistic flair. The event brought together an impressive lineup of top designers, all eager to present their latest creations in a celebration of bold creativity and cross-cultural expression.
In his opening address, Wong highlighted this year’s theme, “Beyond Borders: Fashion Without Limit,” as a reflection of Penang’s dynamic creative spirit.
“It celebrates how fashion transcends geography, culture, and convention — uniting talent, innovation, and imagination from every corner of the region,” he said.
Wong emphasized Penang’s unique role as a cultural crossroads and creative melting pot.
“From our UNESCO World Heritage streets to our thriving arts scene, Penang continues to inspire creativity in all its forms,” he shared. “And tonight, as local designers share the runway with talents from across Malaysia and beyond, Penang is proudly stepping onto the international fashion stage — one that truly goes beyond borders.”
Referencing the world’s fashion capitals — New York, London, Milan, and Paris — Wong added that Penang shares the same DNA: rich culture, artistic energy, and an openness to new ideas.
“We may not yet be among the Big Four, but Penang Fashion Week has the potential to become a defining fashion destination for Southeast Asia.”
Wong also reflected on Penang’s recent presence at the Osaka World Expo 2025, where the state’s creative energy and cultural identity took center stage during Penang Week. One of the most celebrated highlights, he said, was the kebaya — a timeless symbol of heritage and style.
“Every afternoon, the Malaysia Pavilion came alive with kebaya fashion shows, wearing experiences, and cultural talks — drawing large and enthusiastic crowds.”
As the evening unfolded, guests were treated to an exciting fusion of fashion, music, and entertainment — a true testament to Penang’s rising stature in the regional style scene.
