The Little India enclave in Georgetown has a new attraction – The Little India arch.
Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow launched the arch and also celebrated the Pongal festival with business traders and businesses community in Little India.
He was joined by Deputy Chief Minister 11 Prof P. Ramasamy, Penang Island City Council secretary Dato A. Rajendran, Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) president (Penang) Dato N. Gobalakrishnan, Komtar assemblyman, Teh Lai Heng, Chief Minister of Penang Incorporated, Datin S. Bharathi, Liga Muslim Penang president, Datuk Haja Najmudeen Kader among others.
The Penang Island City Council spent a total of RM588,226 while further upgrading of the road cost RM405.555 for the project.
“Penang regards religious freedom as a fundamental tenet of our society’s cohesiveness and economic prosperity.
“The Penang Indian Chamber has been actively organising celebrations during Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas to assist the needy from all communities, regardless of ethnicity, culture or religion, said Chow in his address
He also welcomed the launching of the arch which has been delayed several times. In the meantime, Chow also assured that the Penang State Government will continue to work closely with MICCI Penang to ensure that the Indian community , as well as all Penangites are in the forefront of growth and advancement , while we continue to celebrate our diversity as a multi-racial family.
Little India is the location where early Indian migrants landed at the port nearby to set-up their businesses in the days gone by.
