The new ferries will come into service next month, August 7, 2023.
What’s better is that it will be free for the first month for commuters.
The four ferries, namely, Teluk Bahang, Teluk Kumbar, Teluk Duyung and Teluk Kambi were built in Vietnam with Dutch technology.
Taking the first ride on the spanking new Teluk Bahang was Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Lim Guan Eng, caretaker government’s committee chairman for Transport and Infrastructure Zairil Khir Johari, Tourism and Creative Economy’s Mr Yeoh Soon Hin, Phee Boon Poh, Soon Lip Chee, Dato’ Sasedharan Vasudevan, chief executive officer of Penang Port Sdn Bhd among others.
They have a capacity of 150 passengers and 50 motorcycles and can travel at a top speed of 12-15 knots.
The Penang ferry dates back to 1894 when the ferries were simple wooden boats powered by oars or sail. Only in 1920, the ferries were upgraded to motorized boats.
