The opening is in line with their expansion plans across the country.

Present was MUI chairman Andrew Khoo, Tourism Malaysia Northern Region director Shahrul Aman, Ms Selina Ng, Head Retail Sales, CapitaLand Malaysia, Peter Chan, Ms Pauline Yoon from Penang Global Tourism (PGT) among others.

“We introduced Indie Batik to meet the emerging demand for modernised versions of traditional apparel. It resonates with a growing population wanting to be culture proud and yet trendy”.

“Indie batik will seek to generate a stronger brand presence as it grows its network of stores in
major cities of the country over the next years”, he added.

Indie Batik was first introduced in December 2023 when it was incubated under East India
Company, an established house brand of Metrojaya, which had store presence in 10 malls such
as Mid Valley, LaLaport, Ampang Point, AEON Bukit Tinggi Klang, IOI City Mall, Kuching and
Miri in Sarawak and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

The launch of its Gurney Plaza store marks its second opening for the brand. Other brands under the Metrojaya stable of house brands include East India Company, Somerset Bay and Cape Cod.

The Indie Batik Collection celebrates the heritage of batik from Malaysia, Indonesia and India,
blending handcrafted details with contemporary design for modern audiences.

The brand presents various modes of production ranging from printed batik to wax hand-drawn
batik and manual block printed batik. Its cloths vary from cotton and linen to rayon sports to
provide a wide selection of choices.

Guests were taken on a tour of the new outlet and hosted to some light refreshments.
