China’s Loong Air made its inaugural flight to Penang yesterday evening.
On hand to welcome the holiday makers was Dato Yeoh Soon Hin, Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, Madam Ding Qiao, Vice Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang along with Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism and other officials.
The A320 aircraft was given the customary water cannon salute upon touchdown. Flight GJ8305 from Xi’an, China landed @ 6.55pm at the Penang International Airport (PIA) with 150 passengers.
The arriving tourists were given a boisterous kompang welcome ceremony and also presented with goody bags too.
“This is the first Loong Air flight to Penang, and Penang is the second destination of Loong Air to Malaysia, after Kuala Lumpur. This new direct route strengthens our cultural and economic ties, opening new opportunities for tourism and collaboration”, said Yeoh at the press conference.
Xian has more than 3,100 years of history. Xi’an is known for its ancient history and cultural landmarks, including the Terracotta Army made during the Qin Dynasty.
Xian is the first Northern city in China to be connected to Penang. Its huge Muslim population will find Penang to be well suited for them too.
Yeoh also added that as part of the run-up to the Chinese New Year celebrations, a grand celebration will be held from Jan 25th in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca.
It is jointly organised by MOTAC and Chinese tourism authorities who have announced Malaysia to be one of the preferred holiday destinations.
Also present was MAH Vice President Dato Khoo Boo Lim, MAH Penang Chapter chairman Dato Tony Goh, MOTAC Penang director Dr Annuar Mohamed, Penang MATTA chairman Carolyn Leong, Tourism Malaysia officials among others.
