The 134 year-old Kek Lok Si Temple in Ayer Itam, Penang ushers in the Chinese New Year with a glorious lightning and fireworks ceremony recently.

Throngs of people converged at the temple to witness the event. 

The 120ft bronze statue of Goddess Kuan Yin can be seen from miles across well lighted up in glorious colours.

The temple is also visited by pilgrims from Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines.

The up-coming Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake will be celebrated tomorrow – Jan 29 and 30th this year.

The all important reunion dinner will be held at homes, restaurants and hotels bringing families together for the celebration. 

Already, Penang is seeing an influx of celebrants, visitors and tourists converging on the island.

Hotels and resorts are also seeing brisk business with local and foreign guests.
