Press conference to announce the singing competition

The Gurney Paragon Mall will be organising a singing competition – “Penang 2022: Voice of Rising Star Singing Competition”.

Co-organised by” I Am Singer” KTV together with local talent agency “Velvet Signature”, the Penang 2022: Voice of Rising Star Singing Competition aims to encourage the nations to express their emotions and creativity through music, and at the same time provide a great platform to find and develop promising young singers. 

Present at the press conference was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin.

Aspiring talents aged 15 years old and above who wish to join can sign up for the competition from 18 April 2022 onwards. Simply proceed to the mall’s Concierge at Level 1 to submit their entries. Registration fee is RM50 for each contestant.

The competition will begin with four preliminary rounds (13, 20, 27 May & June 3), where participants are required to pick any song from I Am Singer’s song lists and contest with each other.

Sixty contestants will then be shortlisted through the preliminary round to join the Semi-Finals (June 18, 19 ), with only 20 making it through to the Final which will be held on July 9, 2022 at Gurney Paragon Mall’s Festive Square.Contestants will pit against one another on their singing techniques, pitch accuracy, voice tone, rhythm, articulation, costume and stage performance. Contestants will be judged by a host of experienced singers and vocal teachers. Renowned Penang-born singer Abin Fang will also be joining the panel of judges during the final round of the competition.

For the shoppers of Gurney Paragon Mall, they also have the chance to vote for their favourite contestants through various types of voting channels. Shoppers who spend in the mall will be given one vote card to vote for their favourite contestant. Alternatively, the public can vote through Gurney Paragon Mall’s official Facebook page.

The Penang 2022: Voice of Rising Star Singing Competition is made possible with the support of Penang State Exco Office for Tourism and Creative Economy and a host of sponsors. The list includes Jaya Grocer, Ming Art, WM Café, Wako Sushi Omakase, Gordon Max, Aetrex, Bratpack, The North Face, Salomon, Bentley Music, Blonde and Brunette Hair Studio, Vantage Wine, Yhenz Makeup Artist & Image Consultant and Macalister Hotel.

The champion of the singing competition will bag the coveted prize of RM5,000 cash, trophy and certificate. Meanwhile, the 1 st runner-up, 2 nd runner-up and 3 rd runner-up will walk away with cash prizes worth RM2500, RM1500 and RM500 respectively, alongside trophies and certificates. Apart from these top four prizes, there’s also a ‘Star of The Night’ Award which will be presented to the most outstanding performer during the preliminary round. As for the Final, the most popular contestant will walk away with prizes worth a total of RM1200.

As Penang embraces its identity as a hub of the arts and creative economy, we want to tap on this trajectory to enable more creatives to rise by offering them a platform to showcase their talents and perhaps, kick-start their potential in the art of singing,” said Hunza Group Executive Director, Ms Khor Tze Ming.
