PIA

The Penang state government called on the Transport Ministry to be more transparent on the plans for Penang International airport (PIA) which is among the most “prized” airports in the country.

PIA is expected to reach its previous passenger levels once the vaccination process is achieved and borders being opened.

“As such, PIA was one of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s fastest growing and most profitable airports in pre-Covid times.

“With vaccination rates increasing and economic sectors gradually opening up, it will not be long before the airport achieves its previous levels of passenger numbers,” said state exco for Transport and Infrastructure, Zairil Khir Johari in a press statement.

He also added that it will not be wise to start the expansion works now since PIA is almost empty to prepare for the future.

Zairil also called on Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong to provide a clearer picture on PIA.

He also questioned the progress of the Kulim International Airport project which is being planned by the Kedah government.
