In line with promoting a “clean and green” environment, the Penang Island City Council in collaboration with the Penang Green Council launched the several charging stations for electric motorbikes in the state.
For a start, a total of nine charging stations will be set-up all around the island.
Among the locations are at Astaka Gurney Drive, Renong Food Court, Padang Kota Lama, 1st Avenue, MBPP Complex Beach Street, Desiran Tanjung Complex in Tanjong Tokong, Astaka Batu Lanchang, Sri Selera Bayan Baru Complex, Bukit Jambul Complex and Bukit Gedung Complex.
Present at a launching ceremony at Padang Kota was State Exco for Infrastructure and Transport, Zairil Khir Johari along with Penang Island City Council mayor, Dato Yew Tung Seang and Council secretary A. Rajendran.
“In line with our Penang2030 initiatives, we are promoting these charging stations for electric motorbikes for free. We also urge the federal government to offer concessions and tax incentives to promote electric vehicles.
“We must not be left behind against neighbouring countries in implementing green initiatives. We can save cost and offer the facilities to e-deliveries and riders.
“The project can also assist the B40 group and encourage zero-emission mobility,” said Zairil adding that more charging stations will be set-up across the state,” said Zairil.
Meanwhile, Yew updated that the council has been using electric vehicles since 2015 and with the upgraded and improved EV technology, they can push the use of EV bikes to a higher level.
The bikes are manufactured by Penang-based company, Eclimo Sdn Bhd. Its director Liew Chung Peng was also present at the launching ceremony.
“There are two models, one can can go up to 100km and another can go 200km at one charge. It is very useful for those in the delivery business,” he added
