Penang Hyperlocal walkabouts.
First time candidate for N32 Seri Delima, Tan Hooi Peng (Connie) is diligently on her rounds to meet up with her constituents as there are only two more days for campaigning.
She and her team walk, cycle or drive around her constituency to meet and greet people of all walks of life.
“I really enjoy my daily walkabouts as I get to meet the people of Seri Delima. Besides getting to meet my constituents, I get to see how harmoniously everyone lives together here.
“One of the stories that left a mark in my heart was this pair of neighbours who respected each other’s differences and had the same goal of voting for Penang and Malaysia to be a better place.
“Despite coming from different races, religions and backgrounds, both families treated each other like family. The Indian uncle shared with me that he had been driving his Chinese neighbour to the polling centre every election to cast their ballots together.
“The Indian uncle added that he is a firm believer in the importance of voting because it empowers and allows people to choose the leader they want. He also said every citizen should come out to vote and fulfil their civic duties. Since the Chinese aunty does not drive, he will always offer for her to tag along when he goes to the polling centre,” said Tan.
Another spevial incident was a mother approached her and gave me a drawing of her son.
“She said her son liked me and wanted to support me through his drawing. The boy, Marcus Ang, 11, drew a figure of her with the words “Team Connie”.
“Sometimes, despite being lethargic and stressful at times, it is simple things like these that motivate me to move on and carry on with my fight for the future generations.
“Me and my team also cycle through the roads of Jalan Bunga Raya to meet the residents living in the neighbourhood.
“It not only allowed us to engage with the community door-to-door but also gave us a much-needed workout for our tired bodies.
“The Penang Link Bike is a new initiative launched in 2016. The purpose is to encourage people to use public transportation more, and it is also in line with the concept of “Cleaner Greener Penang.”
“We encourage everyone to participate in community-building and activities with us, and together we can make Seri Delima a more aged-friendly and liveable place,” she added.
