With all the commotion of being overcharged at nasi kandar outlets, Restoran Nasi Kandar Pokok Ketapang bucks the trend when they were honoured by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to be awarded tops under the “Fair Price” category.

What more, the outlet located along Hutton Lane is the only eatery which was selected in the whole of Malaysia.

Owner, Mohamed Uvas Mohamad Jameel was beaming with joy and pride when Penang Hyperlocal approached him for an interview.

The popular eatery employs nine staff including four family members who are brothers and a nephew.

“We have been operating since 1957 as my father set up business right under the Ketapang tree across the road.

“Like other businesses we were greatly impacted due to the lockdown for 18 months. We had a hard time coping with overheads like rental, staff salaries and electricity bills.

“Nevertheless, with the reopening of interstate travel,  business has picked up and we are more confident about our future now.

“This award is a great honour for our stand alone family business and we would like to thank our regular customers and supporters for this recognition,” said Mohamad Uvas.

At the award presentation ceremony held at the KLCC Park, PetronasTwinTowers other awards were also given to categories for Best Retailer, Best Online Operator, Media Awards, Best Minimart, Best Supermarket and many more.
Lending support to the event was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakop and the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.
