The vibrant entertainment scene is back following the green light for pubs and nightclubs to resume operations effective May 15, 2022.
A random check by Penang Hyperlocal at several favourite haunts and also new outlets showed that droves of party goers were hanging out in large numbers and enjoying live bands performances.
The happening night scene is along Chulia Street and Love Lane where a concentration of pubs, bars, restaurants are located.
The Pokok which is set up under a Ketapang tree offers alfresco seating areas with live music. Loads of people were seen waiting for tables as the earlier evening shower had threatened to damper the party mood.
Gurmeet Singh who is a partner at the night spot expressed optimism on business picking up again.
“We had lost a lot of money during the lockdown, luckily we managed to survive. We easily lost a couple of hundred thousand ringgit or more due to the lockdown.
“We are glad that we can open for business and recoup the losses,” said Gurmeet.
They are now open daily from 6pm to 2am and offer live bands.
Meanwhile, Howie Tan, the owner of The Brew is also a much relieved man.
His bar and restaurant which is decked with decorations of guitars and other musical instruments was seeing brisk business.
Sports fans were seen catching up on their favourite sporting events while others were just chilling out with their drinks and food menu which offers Western and local dishes.
“Since we are short of staff, even my daughter helps out at the cashier’s counter and bar. I am happy business has come back, especially during long weekends,” said Tan, adding that business has picked up by 70 to 80 per cent.
Gravy Baby @ Chulia Street is another hot spot with a great deco and lively bar. They had completed their renovations in December last year.
Outlet manager Wendy Goi was seen busy handling the staff and customers waiting for tables. They are actually open for breakfast till late night.
They offer a wide variety of food, drinks, cocktails and chic interior. They also have outlets in Queensbay Mall, Gurney Paragon, Prai, Batu Ferringhi, Malacca and several more in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, other nightspots in the vicinity like the Chulia Court, Loft, Holy Guacamole, Micasa were seen enjoying brisk business.
Soon, moving into the entertainment scene here will be the “Rockafellas” which is expected to open soon at the Straits Quay at the formerly occupied by The Shed.
They are known to serve a good variety of local, Western and Indian cuisine. They recently opened a classy outlet in Langkawi and is now experiencing brisk business in the Pantai Tengah area.
