Alor Setar-born Chef Rosli Shuib had the rare honour of serving as the personal chef to the Malaysian ambassador to the United States, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
During his three-year posting in Washington D.C., Chef Rosli not only catered to the ambassador’s family but also had the opportunity to experience the vibrant lifestyle and diverse community of the American capital.
Specialising in Western and Italian cuisine, Chef Rosli is equally skilled in Asian and local Malaysian dishes. His time abroad was a valuable cultural and culinary experience.
“Looking back at my days in the United States, I quite enjoyed the experience of working for the ambassador and his family,” he shared. “The ambassador loved local food, and I was more than happy to prepare dishes such as Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, Satay, and Beehoon Goreng.”
Chef Rosli also attended several diplomatic functions and gatherings hosted by the Malaysian Embassy, further broadening his professional network. He fondly remembers making new friends and improving his English during his time abroad.

Before his U.S. assignment, Chef Rosli built his career working in prestigious hotels across Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, and his hometown of Alor Setar.
Now back in Alor Star, Chef Rosli is excited to bring his culinary expertise to the StarCity Hotel, where he plans to serve signature Western and Italian dishes infused with local flavours. “I hope to bring some of my favourite recipes to diners here, using local ingredients to give them a unique twist,” he said, adding that he is now working on the new menu for StarCity Hotel.
Recently, guests were treated to his impressive buffet spread during the Gymkhana Night gathering at the StarCity Hotel. With his return, food lovers in the area can once again enjoy Chef Rosli’s culinary creations—a delightful fusion of global sophistication and homegrown taste.
