Some 1243 CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras have been installed in the state as part of Vision Penang 2030 and for the overall public safety and traffic control in the state.
Of this number, 1001 are on the island while the other 242 CCTV cameras are on the mainland.
“Since 2008, the CCTV cameras have been installed by the Penang Island City Council and the number of cameras being installed are always on the increase.
“All of the CCTV cameras are monitored from their headquarters in Komatr while those on the mainland are monitored from Menara MBSP.
“They provide added safety for the public, traffic control, monitoring of illegal dumping, identify traffic lights malfunction, illegal parking and the hindrance to traffic flow.
“The cameras are also accessible to the police to monitor crime hotspots, flood hotspots and illegal land incursions near hilly areas.
“The cameras have also been upgraded to utilise video analytics (facial analytics) for monitoring purposes,” said State Exco for Housing, Local Government, and Town and Country Planning, Jagdeep Singh Deo at a press conference.
