Chen (standing fourth from right) with other entrepreneurs

There comes a time in your working career that you just want to give it all up and start something on your own.

Well, you are not alone.

Ex-hotelier Angeline Chen had worked in the industry for more than 12 years when she started getting the urge to go on her on.

Among the hotels she worked at were the g hotel, Four Points (now Mercure Penang) the Hard Rock Hotel Penang and Arrowood International.

“No more reporting to the boss and putting up with all their attitudes and mood swings. No more preparing reports and getting it back to the drawing board.

Candles

“It was such a relief and much less stressful especially when you consider what we have gone through because of the pandemic,” said Chen.

She started to make candles (scented) and other consumer products.

“During the lockdown, I actually stumbled on this business when I had the extra free time to explore and venture into a new business.

“This has been at the back of my head for quite some time now but I did not have the luxury of time to work on something new other than my digital marketing work,” added Chen.

To-date she is getting encouraging responses from residents and expats in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Perak.

Gift packs

She normally promotes her products online and pop-up markets (Hin Market, Lembah Permai Christmas Market, City Junction Christmas Market, CNY Market at Gurney Paragon, New Year Market in Malaysian German Society, Arts & Craft Market in Mercure Hotel Beach Penang and School’s Out Market at Tanjung Point.

Her collaboration with young entrepreneurs like bakers, chocolate makers, home interior perfume makers and others helped her much.

Upcoming market will be held at Angsana Teluk Bahang Hotel’s Earth Hour Celebration headed by Hin Market. My products are also available for purchase now at Eastern & Oriental – Emporium shop.

Her products range from RM69 – RM92.

“My future plans include adding new fragrances and wax melts into my collection. The aim now is to add more products into my collection before I start driving pop-up stores in KL and other states.

“Next, I will rent a pushcart store in a mall possibly next year and hopefully in due time I will be able to open up my own store/studio in 2024,” she said enthusiastically.

As for her candles, she recommended them to be used indoors in any closed up room.

“Scented candles work best in less humidity in an air conditioned room. All my candles are soy based which are all natural and non-toxic. They should never be left unattended and turned on for more than 4 hours,” she added.
