A delegation from Airbnb led by their Public Policy Lead for Southeast Asia, Ms Shangari Kiruppalini and Senior Consultant Hafizin Tajudin made a courtesy call to the Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Yeoh Soon Hin.
The topic of interest was the State Government’s plan to regulate Short Term Rental Accommodation (STRA).
“Airbnb affirms the State Government’s plan to regulate Short Term Rental Accommodation (STRA).
“As much as the operations of STRA is boosting the economy, it should not cause public nuisance or social issues.
“More importantly, it should not impede the growth of the conventional hospitality industry,” said Yeoh after the meeting.
He also added that the introduction of a comprehensive regulation is aimed at safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders, including neighbours to STRA hosts and other tourism players.
“Our channels of communication are always open and we are glad that Airbnb put forth their suggestions and proposals pertaining to the regulations that are imminent,” he added.
Yeoh also highlighted that the regulations will have to involve and see participation from multiple stakeholders, including Ministries, State Government, STRA players, etc.
