AirAsia is bringing its RedRun to Penang for the very first time on Sunday, September 28, starting from the popular shopping mall here – Gurney Plaza.
Present to announce the event was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai along with Penang Global Tourism (PGT) Chief Executive Officer, Ooi Chok Yan, AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Dato Captain Fareh Mazputra and his team members.
The press conference was held at the Ascott Gurney Penang earlier today.
“AirAsia continues to play a vital role in facilitating air travel for both Penangites and visitors to the state.
“Congratulations to AirAsia for being named the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline for the 16th consecutive year at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025.
“AirAsia contributes 38% of passenger aircraft arrival in Penang Airport,” said Wong in his remarks.
He also added that AirAsia connects Penang to 7 international cities (Bangkok, Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Shenzhen, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City) and 5 domestic cities (JB, KK, KLIA, Kuching and Langkawi). There are 239 AirAsia flights weekly to Penang from international and domestic destinations.
“Penang remains one of Malaysia’s top travel destinations, attracting over 8 million hotel guests in 2024.
“We are pleased to see AirAsia going beyond air travel to connect communities through meaningful ground initiatives like the RedRun. We hope this event will draw greater regional participation and further elevate Penang as a leisure and lifestyle destination.
” I am delighted to officially launch this event, which features 3KM, 5KM and 10KM respectively with the 10KM newly introduced for more serious runners,” added Wong.
RedRun debuted in Indonesia earlier this year, which saw participants from 40 countries racing through Bali’s scenic routes, AirAsia is now turning the spotlight to Penang, its second largest hub in Peninsular Malaysia, known for its vibrant heritage, rich culinary scene, and thriving creative economy.
In the meantime, Dato’ Captain Fareh added that RedRun is more than just a run, it is a regional movement to celebrate the spirit of travel, local culture and togetherness.
“After a great reception in Indonesia, we are proud to bring the next edition to Penang, a city that represents the heart of our operations and our commitment to community. We are also excited to roll out our AirAsia Festival at Gurney Plaza this month, adding even more reasons to visit the Pearl of the Orient.”
