Ensuring the safety and security of visitors and tourists to Penang is part and parcel of the tourism industry.
With this in mind, the office of the Tourism and Creative economy led by their committee chairman YB Yeoh Soon Hin sponsored some 15 mountain bikes to the Penang Police Department yesterday.
Present to receive on behalf of his departure was Penang Police Chief Datuk Mohamad Suhaily Mohamad Zain and his team of senior officers at the police headquarters in Georgetown.
The mountain bikes are worth some RM30,000 including accessories like the safety helmets, gloves, stickers and other items.
In his address, Datuk Mohamad Suhaily said that the Tourism police were formed in 1997 and play an important role to maintain safety and harmony.
“The unit is normally seen patrolling hot spots on the island and also serve to offer assistance and direction to visitors and foreign tourists.
“We are grateful to the state government and YB Yeoh for providing 15 bicycles to our team. The new bicycles will serve to replace old ones. As such we will do our best to serve the community,” he said, adding that the team has some 60 members.
Meanwhile, Yeoh added that ensuring the safety of tourists is an integral part of his office.
“I am happy to be here to hand over the bicycles to the police force. We also appreciate their hard work and sacrifices in order to maintain peace and harmony. We will also work together with the Police force to ensure the safety of visitors to Penang,” said Yeoh.
Later, Yeoh and the Police Chief took a ride on the new mountain bikes to the nearby Chowrasta Market to meet, greet and hand over goody bags to the members of the public.
