Rapid Penang is taking another step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future with electric bus trial runs scheduled for 6 and 7 October 2026, following similar trials conducted by Rapid KL.
The initiative reflects Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd’s ongoing commitment to replacing existing buses with safer, more sustainable and environmentally friendly vehicles, while also improving operational efficiency and the overall public transport experience.
The introduction of electric buses is also aligned with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the National Transport Policy 2019–2030, supporting efforts to expand the use of low-carbon public transportation.
As part of the trial, Rapid Penang will test two electric buses from different manufacturers — a 12-metre Foton and an 8.25-metre Golden Dragon. The buses will be tested separately on selected routes to assess their suitability and operational capabilities under real-world conditions in Penang.
The trials will evaluate key factors including route suitability, traffic conditions, energy consumption, charging performance, safety and passenger comfort.
According to Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer, Syahrul Azmir Ahmad Zaki, the trial marks an important step towards the introduction of Rapid Penang’s first electric buses and supports the phased replacement of its existing bus fleet.
“This is an important benchmark to ensure our operations team has sufficient data and hands-on experience to assess the performance, capabilities and operational requirements of electric buses under real-world conditions before they are introduced onto existing routes,” he said.
Beyond the operational trials, Rapid Penang is also preparing the necessary support systems for electric bus operations, including charging infrastructure, maintenance facilities, staff training and other operational requirements.
The introduction of electric buses will be carried out in phases following the completion of the trial runs. Rapid Penang will continue strengthening its readiness and improving its operations to ensure a smooth and reliable service for passengers.
Rapid Penang is currently in the first phase of procuring 75 electric buses, with deliveries scheduled progressively through March 2027. The procurement forms part of a wider phased fleet replacement programme in Penang involving 240 electric buses and 70 new diesel buses.
This green mobility initiative also supports efforts to encourage greater use of public transportation as a key component of more sustainable urban mobility. It is aligned with the Penang State Government’s Penang Transport Master Plan and Penang Green Agenda, which aim to position Penang as Malaysia’s greenest state by 2030.
The move towards electric buses is more than a fleet upgrade — it is a step towards cleaner mobility, a greener Penang and a more sustainable future for everyone.
With every electric bus introduced, Rapid Penang is moving closer to a public transport system that is cleaner, smarter, safer and better for the environment.
