
Penang’s hospitality landscape is currently experiencing a dynamic transformation, with two hotel giants dominating the sector.
They are the Marriott International and The Ascott Group who are fast expanding their footprints on the island.
This influx of international brands is reshaping the local tourism landscape, intensifying competition and also offering travelers a diverse array of accommodations.
The keen and healthy competition is led by Marriott International’s strategic expansion in Penang with their Penang Marriott Complex, namely the Penang Marriott Hotel, Marriott Executive Apartments and Marriott Residences.
And then, their The Millen Autograph Collection opened recently offering a blend of luxury and modern amenities, catering to both business and leisure travelers followed by the Iconic Marjorie Hotel, a franchise agreement is set to introduced the new hotel, to further diversify Marriott’s presence in the region.
In line with their expansion of their brands, The Westin Penang is expected to be launched in 2026 with 217 upscale rooms and suites, offering guests panoramic views of the Andaman Sea and proximity to Gurney Drive’s attractions.
Additionally, Marriott plans to open 20 hotels across Malaysia in the next five to ten years, with several properties in Penang, including the Penang Marriott Hotel Queens Waterfront and Marriott Residences Queens Waterfront, slated for a 2029 opening.
Meanwhile, the Ascott Group is also fast expanding its presence in Penang with a mix of serviced residences and hotel brands.
Among the latest are the lyf Georgetown Penang offering co-living space offers studio to three-bedroom layouts, co-working areas, and event spaces, catering to digital nomads and young professionals. Other properties include the Citadines Connect Georgetown Penang that combine rooms and modern workplaces for short and long term stays. Another new property is the 1926 Heritage Hotel By The Unlimited Collection slated for the mid 2026 opening. This property will transform a former colonial residence along Burma Road into a 78-unit hotel, preserving its historical architecture.
Other Ascott branded hotels in Penang are the hotels Citadines Prai, Citadines Connect Cecil, Harris in Ayer Itam to name a few.
Meanwhile, in this tit-for-tat expansion between the Marriott International and the Ascott Group, only reflects Penang’s evolving hotel landscape and bring a broader trend of diversification and specialization in the hospitality industry.
