Today, October 20th, people worldwide will unite in celebration of International Sloth Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the protection and preservation of one of the most beloved animals on Earth – the sloth.

The Sloth Conservation Foundation (SloCo) invites everyone to join in this global movement to safeguard sloths and their natural habitats.

Sloths are much more than their slow-moving reputation; they are vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems in the rainforests they call home. However, due to deforestation, habitat fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade, and other human-related threats, sloths face increasing challenges to their survival.

This International Sloth Day, SloCo aims to highlight the urgent need for conservation efforts through their wide array of initiatives. From their innovative Sloth Crossings Project, which installs canopy bridges to help sloths navigate across fragmented forest landscapes, to their Connected Gardens Project, reforesting areas to restore vital habitats, SloCo is at the forefront of sloth conservation.

“We are committed to protecting sloths in their natural environment while raising awareness about the ethical implications of sloth encounters and the importance of preventing illegal wildlife trade,” says Dr. Rebecca Cliffe, founder and executive director of SloCo. “International Sloth Day is the perfect opportunity to educate the public on how we can work together to ensure a future where sloths can thrive.”
