The Pantai Hospital Penang as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives installed not one but two automated external defibrillators (AED) units at the Gurney Bay recreational area here.

The move will surely benefit members of the public who patronise the area for their morning jog, walk or other leisure activities.

Present at a launching ceremony was State Exco for Youth, Sports and Health YB Daniel Gooi who was welcomed by Pantai Hospital Penang chief executive officer Pan Wen Lek and his team.

In an emergency, the first few minutes are critical and timely action can save lives.

“I wish to express my gratitude and congratulations to Pantai Hospital Penang for implementing this initiative for the well-being of the community.

“This significant occasion is not just a commitment but also a promise to safeguard lives. Every year, thousands of lives are lost due to cardiac arrests which often occur suddenly and without warning.

“With swift action, the AED can make a crucial difference as we are also building a culture of preparedness and care. We also want everyone to understand that knowing how to use the AED can save lives and we strongly encourage everyone to participate in training sessions,” said Gooi in his speech.

He also shared that Penang has the largest number of AED units being installed in the country.

“The Penang Island City Council has also made it compulsory for new buildings to be equipped with AED units too.

“So far, we have a total of 224 AED units installed in public places on the island and the mainland too. We also hope to install another five units next year”, he said.

Meanwhile, Pan added that the hospital has installed eight AED units so far which are at Penang Hill Station 39, Penang Hill Station 84, SK Balik Pulau, Setia Pearl Island Phase 1, Jambatan Harapan and Regency Heights plus the two in Gurney Bay.

He also added that the hospital also conducts training sessions on the use of AEDs for the benefit of the members of the public.
