Rahman the legend at Penang Club
By V. Sivaji
Meet Abdul Rahman Mat Ross also known as (aka) the “legend” at the Penang Club.
And you may ask why he is called the legend, simple – he has worked at the club for an amazing 48 years.
He joined the club at a tender age of 22 and is still going strong attending to club members and their guests in the Food & Beverage Department.
Now at 70-years “young”, Rahman has no plans to retire just yet and stay at home with his grandchildren.
“I love my job and I love meeting people. The club members have also become good friends over the years. This is what keeps me going.
“Over the years, I have seen and experienced many memorable incidents at the club. In those days, it was only for Westerners and no locals were allowed entrance.
“Things changed over the years and more local Malaysians have been allowed membership and to lead the club.
He joined in 1976 and is now the supervisor at the club. He has two grown up children and five grandchildren.
For the uninitiated, the Penang Club is the oldest membership club in the country, being founded in 1868.
Among their facilities include the verandah dining area facing the sea, billiard room, darts room, Men’s Bar, swimming pool, gym, and a dining hall on the second floor among other facilities.
According to the general manager of the club, Shehkar Nair, Rahman is one of the most dedicated staff at the club.
“Over the years senior members who patronize the club know and treat Rahman more like a buddy for his calm and humble demeanor and over the years, he has become good friends with many club members too”, said Shehkar.
The prestigious Penang Club is led by its president Dato Malkit Singh and his able committee.
