In a first of its kind gathering in Penang, some 5,000 bikers from all over the country including those from Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunel gathered at the Esplanade for the 5th Vespa Lambretta Jamboree 2022.
Oh hand to launch the event was State Exco for Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, Penang Director for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Jonathan Freddy Bagang, Hotel NEO+ Penang general manager Dato Gulab Mahatam Rai, Aidzam Alias founder of Motoburuk Garage along with other guests.
Jagdeep was also presented with a rider’s leather jacket to fit into the biker’s fraternity at the launching ceremony at Esplanade. It touted himself as looking as the “Terminator” in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.
“I am happy to see the bikers from so many countries who have descended upon Penang for this grand gathering. This proves that Penang is one of the best destinations in the country. We will also ensure the safety and security of the participants and public through our enforcement agencies,” said Jagdeep.
It was a carnival atmosphere as people from all walks of life took the opportunity to take a closer look at these “mean machines”.
Gulab added that his hotel is proud to host such gatherings and being the official hotel for the event which will surely add to the lure of tourism activities to the state.
“I am sure that the spinoff from this gathering will also benefit the stakeholders in the tourism industry,” he said.
The riders also went on a heritage tour dubbed the “Gentlemen Ride” around Georgetown to mark the gathering.
Meanwhile, the Esplanade was filled with rows of stalls and outlets which offered goods and materials for the collection of biking enthusiasts.
There are also those showcasing classic bikes, sale of spare parts, food outlets, games, live bands and other interesting programmes.
Bikers from all over the country took the opportunity to bond and forge friendship among the biking fraternity.
