“As we gather to honor German culture, friendship, and the vibrant community spirit that defines Penang, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to MGS for bringing us together for this special celebration. For half a century, Oktoberfest has been celebrated here in Penang, making it the longest-running Oktoberfest event in Malaysia. This remarkable history reflects the strength of the bonds between the German community and the people of Penang, highlighting the depth of cultural exchange that thrives in our city.

“It is a milestone in our country to recognize German cultural celebration as one of Penang’s cosmopolitan heritage. Penang with its vibrant port has welcomed people from many nations since the early days. Penang is not only home to Oktoberfest but also hosts a diverse array of other cultural festivals, such as the Japanese Bon Odori festival, Yosakoi Parade, the Latin America Film Festival, and the Irish Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. These events contribute to the rich cultural heritage of Penang, showcasing the diversity and openness of the community, which embraces and celebrates cultures from around the world”, said Wong.

He also shared that the Germans are the biggest investors from Europe and Germans are coming to Penang for business, recreation or retirement.

“Vice-verse, increasing numbers of Malaysian students, technicians, and tourists are traveling to Germany and MGS provides crucial language training and forms a cultural link to both countries. I am grateful to MGS for continuing to train thousands of students to master the German language and to remain the center of German cultural activities in Penang”, he added.

Meanwhile, MGS president, Ms Carolinda welcomed all guests and thanked them for their support and fellowship.
