The five remaining iconic Penang ferries will be handed over to qualified companies to be put to good use from July 1, 2021.

In a press statement from Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, the short listed companies will refurbish the ferries to be converted into a floating museum, tourist ferries (2 units) and floating restaurants (2 units).

“There were many suggestions and proposals received by PPC by open tender and after due deliberation and consideration, these companies were selected.

“The companies will be offered a 10-year contract with the option of another five-years to utilise these ferries,” said Tan.

He also added that they hope to hold a handing over ceremony on July 1 depending on the MCO situation.

“Otherwise, we will hold an online virtual handing over ceremony. The successful companies will be given three to six months to refurbish the ferries to be put into their new operations again.

“Our mission now is to ensure that these iconic ferries are put to good use again and they will become tourist attractions for the Penang state,” added Tan.
