The Penang State government through the Penang Island City Council sent a convoy of vehicles and personnel to help in the relief operations in Johor in view of the flood situation there.

Some 20 personnel along with several vehicles and other trucks were in the entourage.

Present were Penang Chief Chief Minister YB Chow Kon Yeow along with State Exco for Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, Penang Island City Mayor Dato Yew Tung Seang, MBPP secretary Dato A. Rajemdran, Councillors and other heads of departments.

In his short address Chow said that it is their duty to help out in the relief efforts during these difficult times.

“We understand the hardship being experienced by the victims and the local authorities to cope with the situation. 

“The assistance will go to several areas in Johor. Normally, in any emergency situation, there is a need for rescue and relief by local authorities and Bomba.

“We will also send food, shelter and other materials to the affected areas. Our team will also help out in the clean-up of the areas affected. Lastly, there needs to be the reconstruction of damaged homes and premises.

“We hope other agencies, corporate and non-governmental organizations (NGO) will come forward to  also assist the victims,” said Chow.

He also added that on previous occasions Penang had sent assistance to flood victims in Selangor and Baling.

“In the meantime, I also call on the volunteers on their safety and hygiene while carrying out their duties there,” added Chow.

Yew in his address said that the Penang Island City Council understands the hardship of the victims and the government agencies there.

“I contacted Datuk Bandar there to check on areas which need assistance, Other local agencies are also sending assistance. If there is a need for more personnel and equipment, we will be happy to send reinforcements” he said.
