The Penang state-level countdown for the Merdeka celebrations was launched by the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Chow Kon Yeow at the Straits Quay Retail Marina.
Present were State Exco for Domestic & International Trade, Consumer Affairs &Entrepreneurship Development Dato Abdul Halim Hussain, State Exco for Infrastructure and Transport Zairil Khir Johari, State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Yeoh Soon Hin, State Exco for Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs and State Exco for Youth and Sports, Soon Lip Chee.
Representatives and heads of departments from the various governmental agencies and departments were also present.
After a presentation of the national anthem and flag raising ceremony, Chow addressed those present and handed over the symbolic national flag and goody bags to the various heads of departments.
“After two years of not having our independence celebrations, I am grateful that we can celebrate the Merdeka Day in peace and harmony. The celebrations will serve to remind us of the freedom and patriotism for all.
“We must also fly our flag in celebrating our independence and I call on all businesses and homes to fly the national flag,” added how.
He later flagged off a large convoy of motorbikes and trucks which will also distribute the national flag at strategic points around the city.
