Great news for those using the Penang Roll On, Roll Off services (RORO).

With effect Jan 1, 2022, those using the RORO services are entitled to a 50% discount on their fares.

The new fares will be RM1 (from RM2) for motorbikes and RM0.60 (from RM1.20) for bicycle users.

The announcement was made by Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, chairman of Penang Port Commission at a press conference today.

Also present was Pn Monaliza Suhaimi, General Manager Penang Port Commission, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, chairman Penang Port Sdn Bhd, Dato’ Sasedharan Vasudevan, chief executive officer of Penang Port Sdn Bhd.

“The discount will come into effect for a six month period, from Jan 1, 2022 till June 30, 2022.

“We hope that with the reduction of fares, it will help alleviate the hardship of the people especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The cost of absorbing the discounted fare works out to RM58,333 per month or RM350,000 for the six months,” added Tan.

At the same press conference, Tan also handed over a mock cheque for RM15 million allocation from the federal government for Penang Port to purchase five new ferries.

The RM15 million is part of the RM30 allocation from the federal government.

“Penang Port Sdn Bhd will upgrade the ferry terminals and also bear any extra cost for the purchase of the new ferries.

“Making available the ferry service is a social obligation of the federal government and it is therefore not a money making venture,” said Tan.

He also hoped that with the transformation of the ferry terminals , they will provide better service to the public and also become an identity of Penang.
