Penang Centennial Heritage Excellence Award calling for nominations

The Penang State Government is calling for nominations for the “Penang Centennial Heritage Excellence Award”.

Among those who are entitled to apply for the awards are organisations, societies, educational institutions, businesses, services, associations and related bodies which has been established for at least 100 years.

However, they must still be in operation.

Present at a press conference to announce the initiative was Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, along with CM 11 Prof P. Ramasamy and State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy Yeoh Soon Hin.

Also present was Penang Heritage Commissioner Rosli Nor, Commissioner for Penang, George Town Heritage Incorporated general manager , Dr Ang Ming Chee, Building director from Seberang Perai City Council, Noorhanis Noordin, Professor Dr Premalatha Karupiah among others.

Nominations are open from today till and close on Sept 30, 2022. Winners for the award will be rewarded with a certificate and plaque.

“Presently, we have 11 buildings which have been gazetted under the National Heritage Act 2005. However, this collaboration with strategic partners will ensure and safeguard the heritage and intrinsic values of the entities in Penang,” added Chow.

Yeoh added that as Penang continues to grow and develop, it is important to recognize our living heritage and show appreciation to the significant entities since 100 years.

Meanwhile, at the same press conference, another outstanding student from Penang was recognised by the state government to excel in his further studies.

Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow presented a RM3,000 mock cheque to Yeoh Zi Song, 21, who has been pursuing his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States of America.

He is majoring in Mathematics for the 2020/2024 semester.

Also present at the ceremony was Yeoh’s parents Yeoh Yean Cheong (father and mother Tang Siew Chng.

 Yeoh was a former student of Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Ling and Taylor’s University.

In wishing well in his studies, Chow also commended Yeoh for excelling in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2020 (Gold Medal) and International Olympiad in Informatics 2018 (Gold Medal).

“I am sure that you will make the country proud upon completing your education,” added Chow.
