With the reopening of international borders, Penang International Airport (PIA) may see new regional airlines flying here.

NOK Air is planning to provide connectivity between Bangkok and Penang if there is adequate demand.

Nok Air is a low-cost airline in Thailand operating mostly domestic services out of Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport.

They currently fly to 24 cities in Thailand, offering the largest coverage in the country. Their fleet consists of  14 Boeing 737-800 and three (3) Bombardier Q-400.

The airline’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato Tai Chong Yih said that their airline is looking into the possibility of providing another option for travellers between Bangkok and Penang.

“With the re-opening of international borders, it is in NOK Airlines’ plan to increase the revenue contribution from international routes.

“These new routes include plans to China, Japan, Indo-China, Singapore, Malaysia and India, to be carried out in phases.

“One of the destinations being considered is the opening of a new route BKK-PEN-BKK, which is currently being serviced by Thai Air Asia and Thai Smile.

“Depending on traffic demands, NOK Airlines would like to supplement this route as well to open up the access of Penang to visitors from Thailand and returning Penangites,” said Dato Tai to Penang Hyperlocal.
